When I first met Junwen, he struck me as a very cultured, stylish guy (how many men can pull off bright red skinny jeans?) He was very popular, charismatic, and talented…There was a reason I felt like he was the popular guy at school whereas I was the wallflower…He was the prince while I was the milk maid.
Then I found out he liked comics.
Not just liked comics….Like, knows everything there is to know about them and all their multi-universe story lines.
And…I liked him even more!
I did not grow up reading comics or even watching that many comic-based cartoons (like Batman, Superman, etc.) But, I did grow up watching, reading, and play-acting a lot of fantasy and sci-fi…I grew up with Star Wars, Star Trek, The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, EVERYTHING Disney, Dark Waters, Gargoyles, TMNT, Rainbow Brite, the list is long, vast, and various.
Somehow that list was missing comics. But the fact that my cultured sweetie was a closet geek totally rocked my world.
My world has been broadened by being married to Junwen in many ways…One of them is appreciation for comics and the Marvel Universe. (Which, I gather, is his preference, although I’ve also been taught more about DC comics as well.) I have learned that comics are a way that Junwen decompresses. He likes to go to 3rd Street Promenade just to visit Barnes and Noble in order to gather all the new comics into a corner and read for ages. He has recently discovered a library in Culver City that allows him to borrow comics for free (the Santa Monica library charges us for membership because we live in Los Angeles).
So when I saw that WonderCon, organized by the same people who do the infamous ComicCon in San Diego, had opened ticket sales last December, I decided that would be the perfect Christmas gift for Junwen. Well, finally we could use that Christmas gift, as WonderCon happened just last Saturday.
I’m a geek I wanted to fully embrace my husband’s interest in comics, I suggested we could use our Halloween costumes when we go…Because the last time we went, my favorite part was seeing all the awesome characters people designed for cosplay. Junwen was okay going along with it, because (his cultured side coming out), “Being Hiro means I can just wear normal clothes.” 😛 [Read more…]
