So I just saw my first Marilyn Monroe movie, “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes“. It was actually really interesting, in a “what the heck are they doing here…wait I thought this was the “wholesome” era…Gee I don’t think you’d see this nowadays!” kinda way. My gal friends and I were discussing afterwards, and there were a couple things that really stood out to us.
(1) How the movie so transparently objectifies men
Yea, you heard me, men. We’re so used to seeing women objectified, that it actually felt weird when the shoe was on the other foot. There were three ways I could put to words:
- First, that men can be easily controlled by a woman who uses her body as a weapon.
- Second, that men are more desirable if they have wealth.
- Third…well…there was a whole song dedicated to Olympic athletes training in tiny-barely-there-nude-colored-shorts…
