I’m not one to blog about beauty products, but after talking to Junwen I realized this could be a teachable moment for those of a darker complexion, and an eye-opener for those who, like me, have blonde eyelashes. The struggle is real.
Before I start I do want to say that I admire women who have embraced the blonde lashes and even made them a statement. (I’m looking at you, Tilda Swinton.) Beauty is how we define ourselves, so in no way is this post saying anyone must have dark lashes to be beautiful. Women who embrace their fair hair are gorgeous, too. Case in point:
Some of us, however, are less secure in our natural look and desire more noticeable lashes. In pictures, I feel like I look hairless, and for years had turned to mascara to give those shy lashes some definition. This was much to my mother’s chagrin, as she always loved my sister’s and my golden lashes. I guess the grass is always greener!
I was confessing to Junwen just this morning that with my dependence on mascara, I wondered what I would do if I was ever on the game show Survivor. Would mascara be the one item I brought with me? 😛 (No, but I would think about it…) Or what about long excursions into the back country? Mascara feels like a pretty useless thing to bring along when you’re connecting to nature. But I would feel so vulnerable! Who else with blonde lashes can relate?
That all changed when a friend recommended eyelash tint. Eyelash what? You heard me. It’s like hair dye, but for your eyelashes. I feel so vulnerable sharing about this because I know how vain or shallow it might sound to people, but seriously. Unless you have blonde lashes (and you’re a woman), you don’t understand the struggle. I ordered a DIY kit off of Amazon and set about doing it myself, and am amazed by the results! I’ve gone mascara-free for two days now and don’t feel ashamed to walk out the door! (Hyperbole? Maybe. But there’s truth in it.) Here’s the product I used:
